THE COST OF BRITISH JUSTICE
Our prisons are full of violent criminals. The cost of keeping one prisoner incarcerated for one night is currently £77. That does not include legal representation, medical treatment, or special requirements. The yearly cost per prisoner to the British taxpayer is £28,105. There are currently 82319 prisoners held in 139 prisons in England and Wales.
The cost of one execution in the US is currently 48% more than keeping a criminal in prison for life, an average of $1.2m. The average length of time a prisoner spends on death row awaiting execution is 20 years.
